SABS announces additional scheme to support the global electronics industry in issuing SABS EMC CoCs

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has announced that from 1 November 2022, the manufacturers of non-telecommunication electronic and electrical equipment can apply for a SABS EMC CoC by using an EMC test report issued by an ILAC (International Laboratories Accreditation Cooperation) accredited laboratory.

An EMC CoC is required for any non-telecommunication electronic product entering the South African market. Up to 1 November of this year, SABS EMC CoCs were only offered to manufacturers whose products were tested in SABS-affiliated laboratories (SABS A-Labs). While the SABS A-Lab program continues, manufacturers now have the option to have their products tested by any ILAC-accredited laboratory.

The SABS A-Lab program is a Type 3 quality assurance scheme, which allows SABS to enter into agreements with local and international accredited laboratories, based on inspections or surveillance visits to manufacturers, test points, and product sampling as part of the ongoing verification process. With most verification processes completed, the SABS can issue an EMC CoC within thirty (30) days for the applications where products have been tested by a SABS A-laboratory, whereas the turnaround time is ninety (90) days for the applications that use test reports of an ILAC laboratory.

Additional notes:

Most electronic products contain and emit electromagnetic properties. To ensure that emissions are not harmful to people, animals, and the environment, immunity and emissions must be tested to ensure that the results comply with the regulations and specifications contained in national and international standards.
