Quality
Directive 200/98/EC on waste establishes the legislative framework for the handling of waste in the Community. The directive defines key concepts such as waste, recovery and disposal.
The directive also clarifies the distinction between waste and non-waste. It was used as template for the establishment of “End of Waste” directives such as:
- Council Regulation (EU) No 333/2011 (establishing criteria determining when certain types of scrap metal cease to be waste),
- Commission Regulation (EU) No 715/2013 (establishing criteria determining when copper scrap ceases to be waste),
- Commission Regulation (EU) No 1179/2012 (establishing criteria determining when glass cullet ceases to be waste).
These regulations establish criteria when certain types of waste stop being waste. They also determine criteria for certification bodies assessing compliance of quality systems of waste collectors, merchants and processors. A certification body certifies the quality system in accordance with ISO 9001 and relevant regulation.
SIQ is a holder of accreditation for certification in accordance with 333/2011 and 715/2013 regulations and may conduct audits and issue accredited certificates to scrap metal collectors, processors and merchants selling scrap as feedstock.
